Our Mission statement
Our mission is to enhance general dermatologic services and infrastructure in Burundi. Through advocacy, education and community empowerment, we strive to achieve sustainable improvements in dermatological health outcomes.
Our Story
The evolution of Safe Skin Initiative began when Preston and Kaitlin traveled to Burundi for the adoption of their youngest son. While there, they were able to meet and help individuals with albinism at a school in the capital city of Bujumbura. They also made a connection with some individuals who were leading local charity work that involved health care. From there, Preston remotely assisted dermatologic care for some of their patients and his desire to do more began to evolve. After a lecture at the America Academy of Dermatology, Preston and Doriane met and realized their mutual interest in furthering dermatology in Burundi. Aided by Heather and Kirk’s background in non-profit work and Kaitlin’s previous volunteer work in Romania, Safe Skin Initiative was founded with the hope of assisting those who are already doing so much in Burundi.
